Prof. Brett Cohen

Brett has over 25 years’ experience working on climate and sustainability projects in the energy, industry, and waste sectors in South Africa and globally, in both academia and the private sector. His consulting and research interests include climate-related risks and opportunities, greenhouse gas emissions accounting and modelling, scenario and futures planning, energy systems analysis, technology assessment, and policy and strategy development.

He is a Lead Author on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) seventh Assessment Report (AR7), served as a lead author on AR6, and is on the UNFCCC Roster of Experts on climate change matters. Brett is a C2 National Research Foundation (NRF) rated researcher and has published widely in the peer-reviewed academic press.

He collaborates with the Meridian team on projects exploring the intersection between energy, industry, and climate policy. He also works as an independent consultant and holds a position as an Honorary Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCT.

Brett holds a BSc and PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cape Town.
