Just Energy Transitions and Partnerships in Africa: A South African Case Study for the Ukama Platform

November 2022 | Publications, Reports and Briefing Notes

This report was written by Meridian as part of a series dedicated to just energy transition partnerships in Africa, produced by the Ukama Platform. The series provides key insights from three African country studies – South Africa, Nigeria and Senegal – on the emerging ‘just energy transition partnerships’ concept and its implications for African and Africa-Europe relations. For the South African context, Meridian Economics draws process and technical learnings from its recent conceptualisation and development of the ‘Just Transition Transaction’ (JTT) framework to unlock and support South Africa’s just energy transition. We then explore the differences between the JTT and South Africa’s Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) announced at COP26,  and provide recommendations for the development of other JETPs in Africa. This report, along with case studies on Nigeria and Senegal, can be found on the IDDRI website.
