This technical report explores how Eskom’s existing coal-fired power stations can be operated more flexibly to meet South Africa’s evolving electricity system needs. Building on detailed modelling and analysis, the study examines how measures such as seasonal shutdowns and other flexible operating modes could optimise system performance, lower costs, and align coal operations with national and international climate goals. The technical report was presented at a webinar hosted by EE Business, with the recording and presentation slides available below.
